Graphic Art in Children’s Publications
- a nostalgic trip to magical days

-

This day comprises of three one hour sessions of the backstories and creation of  well-loved children’s illustrations and novels

Lecture 1: Rupert, the Anthropomorphic bear

Ruperts’s centenary was in 2020. This lecture is the fascinating backstory of how and why Rupert was created, exploring the folklore and dark influences of his initial adventures. See how Herbert & Mary Tourtel followed by Alfred Bestall progressed through the years with innovative artwork, multi-level adventures and adult storylines that kept Rupert as a favourite through generations. Featuring rare items and  ephemera from major collectors

Lecture 2: Dan Dare & the Art of Frank Hampson

Eagle was the ground-breaking creation of a vicar and an art student in 1950 who sold the concept to Hulton Press and achieved 1 million sales at launch. It was the first of the postwar comics to be printed in full colour and introduced Frank Hampson’s all British space hero Dan Dare. At it’s peak Frank had a studio of eight people creating the weekly two page strip and this lecture looks in detail at the way the studio worked to create award winning artwork.

Lecture 3: Illustrators of Children’s novels

This is an entertaining and nostalgic look at the artists who illustrated children’s novels and helped make them come to life. A fascinating story of art in novels.
